Clearance Diver Preparation Checklist 2026

Navy Diver is a demanding Australian Navy pathway. ADF Careers lists Navy Diver as a full-time role and explains that Navy Diver candidates are an exception to the broader Navy rule where most roles no longer require a Pre-entry Fitness Assessment.

Official sources:

This checklist is for preparation only. Always verify current requirements with ADF Careers.

1. Confirm the Role

Before training hard for any role, make sure you understand what you are applying for.

Check:

  • Entry method.
  • Medical and fitness expectations.
  • Training pipeline.
  • Service commitment.
  • Daily work and likely duties.
  • Risks and responsibilities.
  • Whether your expectations match the actual role.

Do not rely only on social media clips or second-hand stories. Start with official role information.

2. Build PFA Readiness

ADF Careers lists Navy Diver PFA standards in its current PFA material as:

| Component | Minimum standard | |-----------|------------------| | Push-ups | 30 | | Sit-ups | 25, feet held | | Shuttle run | Level 10.1 |

Treat these as minimums, not targets.

Your checklist:

  • Can complete push-ups with strict form.
  • Can complete sit-ups without rushing or shortening reps.
  • Can practise 20-metre shuttle running.
  • Has a weekly conditioning plan.
  • Has a recovery plan.
  • Has tested the full sequence under fatigue.

3. Develop Water Confidence

Clearance diver preparation should include comfort in and around water, but do not perform risky breath-hold or underwater training alone.

Safer preparation areas:

  • General swimming fitness.
  • Treading water.
  • Controlled breathing while swimming.
  • Efficient freestyle technique.
  • Comfort entering and exiting water.
  • Pool confidence under supervision.

Avoid:

  • Solo breath-hold training.
  • Hyperventilation.
  • Underwater distance attempts without qualified supervision.
  • Training through panic or dizziness.

4. Train Strength Endurance

The PFA is only one marker. A useful preparation base includes:

  • Upper-body endurance.
  • Core endurance.
  • Leg durability.
  • Grip strength.
  • Loaded movement readiness.
  • Shoulder resilience.

Use simple movements:

  • Push-ups.
  • Rows.
  • Squats.
  • Lunges.
  • Carries.
  • Planks.
  • Step-ups.

Consistency matters more than novelty.

5. Learn the Language of the Role

You do not need to become a clearance diver before joining, but basic familiarity helps you understand the pathway.

Study areas:

  • Diving physics basics.
  • Decompression concepts.
  • Underwater communication.
  • Mine countermeasures overview.
  • Explosive ordnance disposal context.
  • Navy rank and structure.
  • Safety culture.

Keep this grounded. Do not treat internet study as official training.

6. Build Mental Resilience

Selection pathways can be stressful. Preparation should include routines that help you stay functional under pressure.

Useful habits:

  • Sleep consistency.
  • Breath control.
  • Training logs.
  • Gradual exposure to hard but safe workouts.
  • Honest self-review.
  • Debriefing what went wrong after sessions.

The goal is not to feel fearless. The goal is to make good decisions when tired, uncomfortable, or under assessment pressure.

7. Organise Your Application

Physical readiness is only one part of joining.

Prepare:

  • Identity documents.
  • Education records.
  • Medical history.
  • Employment details.
  • Referee information.
  • Questions for your candidate manager.
  • Time for appointments and follow-up tasks.

Administrative delays can slow a good candidate.

8. Use a Training Log

Track:

  • Push-ups.
  • Sit-ups.
  • Shuttle run level.
  • Swim sessions.
  • Strength sessions.
  • Sleep.
  • Injuries or soreness.
  • Notes from role research.

Trends matter. A single good session does not prove readiness.
