Kapooka Preparation Checklist 2026: What to Build Before Army Recruit Training

Kapooka is the common starting point for enlisted Australian Army soldiers. Candidates should arrive fit, organised, coachable, and ready to live in a structured training environment.

This checklist is not official joining instructions. Always follow the instructions you receive from ADF Careers and Defence.

1. Confirm Your Joining Instructions

Your actual instructions beat any online checklist.

Before leaving, confirm:

  • Date and location.
  • Travel arrangements.
  • Required documents.
  • Required clothing and personal items.
  • Medical or administrative requirements.
  • Contact details for questions.

Do not rely on old packing lists from forums. Requirements can change.

2. Build Fitness Above the Minimum

The PFA is an entry checkpoint, not the end state. ADF Careers explains that some candidates may need to complete a Pre-entry Fitness Assessment before joining, depending on role requirements.

Preparation priorities:

  • Push-ups.
  • Sit-ups.
  • Shuttle run fitness.
  • Easy running base.
  • Leg durability.
  • Mobility.
  • Recovery habits.

Aim to exceed the minimum standard comfortably.

3. Practise Routine Discipline

Army training is structured. Candidates who are used to routine adapt faster.

Practise:

  • Waking at a consistent time.
  • Preparing clothing the night before.
  • Keeping personal items organised.
  • Being early.
  • Following written instructions.
  • Completing small tasks properly.

This is not glamorous, but it matters.

4. Reduce Injury Risk

Many candidates increase training too quickly once enlistment feels close.

Avoid:

  • Sudden high-volume running.
  • New boots on long walks without progression.
  • Daily max-effort sessions.
  • Ignoring shin, knee, or Achilles pain.
  • Copying extreme training plans online.

Build gradually. Arriving injured is worse than arriving slightly less fit but healthy.

5. Prepare Your Feet

Foot care becomes important when you are moving, standing, and training more than usual.

Preparation:

  • Break in appropriate footwear gradually.
  • Learn blister prevention basics.
  • Keep toenails trimmed.
  • Use clean socks.
  • Pay attention to hotspots early.

Do not wait until training to discover that your feet do not tolerate your footwear.

6. Build Basic Strength Endurance

Useful movements:

  • Push-ups.
  • Squats.
  • Lunges.
  • Step-ups.
  • Carries.
  • Rows.
  • Planks.

Keep form clean. Training should improve durability, not create constant soreness.

7. Get Used to Being Coached

Recruit training involves correction. Do not take every correction personally.

Useful habits:

  • Listen fully before responding.
  • Fix the issue quickly.
  • Ask clear questions at appropriate times.
  • Avoid excuses.
  • Help the people around you when appropriate.

Coachable candidates improve faster.

8. Sort Admin Early

Prepare:

  • Identification.
  • Banking details.
  • Medical paperwork.
  • Emergency contacts.
  • Phone and account access.
  • Copies of important documents.
  • Any forms requested by Defence.

Administrative disorganisation creates stress you do not need.

9. Build Mental Resilience

You do not need a complicated mental system. You need habits that help under pressure.

Practise:

  • Controlled breathing.
  • Keeping perspective during hard sessions.
  • Debriefing mistakes.
  • Maintaining sleep discipline.
  • Asking for help early when needed.
  • Resetting after correction.

10. Keep Official Sources First

Use online preparation resources carefully. Good resources can help you organise training, but official instructions and candidate manager guidance come first.
